Frequently Asked Questions

Q:  Do you only treat athletes?
A:  No. If your condition is listed on our "conditions we treat" you're an excellent candidate for our care.

Q:  Do you treat babies or young children?
A:  No. Because we're a sports medicine specialist our care focuses on adolescents and adults. Our treatment is exceptionally effective for this patient population, but not well suited for babies, young children or the elderly. General practice chiropractors treat patients of all ages.

Q:   I thought chiropractors only treat back conditions, I have an extremity problem (shoulder, hip, elbow, hand, knee, foot, TMJ)
A:  Sports chiropractic specialists go on to complete an additional 3 years of training after chiropractic college to enable them to provide expert care for the full spectrum of non-operative musculoskeletal conditions.  In fact, the majority of patients we treat consult with us for an extremity condition.

Q:  Do I need a referral from my Primary Care Physician (PCP) for chiropractic care?
A:  No. Because doctors of chiropractic are primary spine care physicians, insurance companies do not require you to obtain a referral from your PCP.

Q:  Do you require spinal x-rays on all your patients?
A:  No, we don't routinely order x-rays on our patients.
However, there are times when imaging is certainly indicted. For example, if your spine or extremity pain is the result of a significant trauma or your medical history reveals the possibility of an underlying disease, imaging (radiographs or MRI) would be ordered. Of course the doctor would not proceed with ordering any test or performing any procedure without first obtaining your consent.

Q: Does spinal manipulation hurt?
A:  No, when performed by a highly skilled chiropractor the procedure is a gentle movement to the spine that patients enjoy.

Q:  Are the treatments at your office private?
A: Yes, in fact you will be the only patient in the office at the time of your visit.

Q:  What is the cracking noise I hear when my spine is adjusted / manipulated?
A:  Spinal joints contain a fluid know as synovium. When your spine is manipulated, a vacuum is created within the joint capsule releasing gas bubbles as an audible pop or cracking sound that is completely harmless. A successful treatment increases joint motion to a stiff joint and is not contingent upon this noise.

Q:  Do I have to have my spine cracked during treatment?
A:  No. Although manipulative therapy is a safe and painless procedure when performed by a highly skilled chiropractor, some patients prefer not having the procedure performed. In that case we use joint mobilization as an alternative procedure. (see our treatment procedures section of our website for the distinction between joint manipulation vs. mobilization).

Q:  What does the D.C. after your name mean?
A:  The title D.C. stands for Doctor of Chiropractic.
